Practical Information

French VAT refund

For invoicing to third parties

Event organizers or foreign companies hosting meetings, exhibitions or conferences in France and re-invoicing to third parties (exhibition, registration fees) must, in most cases, pay French VAT for the event.

To obtain a VAT refund, the organizer is legally required to:
1) File a VAT statement to register in France before re-invoicing clients (this can also be done through a tax representative - mandatory if outside eec),
2) charge French VAT in all invoices related to the event (clients, participants, sponsors, etc),
3) deduct VAT on French suppliers' invoices.

Most participants/sponsors can also obtain a refund of VAT by filing a request through a tax representative.

When there is no invoicing to third parties

if no expenses are paid to the organizer by the participants attending a meeting, conference or exhibition, VAT on suppliers' invoices can usually be refunded without prior declaration. The organizer must provide the original suppliers' invoices (specifying the organizer's name and address). These invoices must be submitted to local VaT authorities below.
